As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart. Proverbs 27:19 Mom’s life was a true testament to her heart. Her heart for God, her family, her friends, and her ministry. All things she was in life reflected her heart, full of love and led by God. Janice Carol Odell (Nunley), born January 5, 1941, left this earthly home for her heavenly home on July 7, 2023. Preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Inez Nunley, her brothers Richard and Larry Nunley, and infant son, Mark Allen Odell. Survived by her loving husband Charley Odell, three loving daughters, Diane (Leon) Brisco, Dawn (John) Palumbo, and Dana (Robert) Gonzalez; five grandchildren, Jeremy (Debbie) Lopez, Amber Pickett, Jennifer (Damien) Evinger, Jessica Kafka, and Esabella Gonzalez; and eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Claudia; and many extended family members and friends. Jan exhibited excellence in everything she did, family life, work life, and ministry. She was recognized for her performance and held in high esteem with her employers throughout the years. She was regarded as a wise advisor and compassionate leader/teacher/preacher as she worked alongside her husband in ministry to the Native American community. As a pianist and vocalist, she touched many and displayed a heart of worship through her music. She had an uncanny ability to hear a song and play it on the piano without reading a single note. The beautiful sound of her worship will be remembered. Mom’s family was the light of her life. She gave her whole heart to her husband, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. There was never a doubt of her love for all of us and she showed it in so many ways. She loved to cook for her family, and she was a tremendous cook. The holidays brought her so much joy, from the time in the kitchen to the gathering of her favorite people. Mom loved playing games when the family gathered and was a master at most games. Mom’s gentle, soft nature created a warm atmosphere wherever she was and sometimes disguised her quick wit and prankster side. She loved to laugh and prompt laughter with a one-liner or a comedic philosophy. She was also fiercely protective of her people and spent many hours praying for God’s shield around us. Mom was the epitome of a mother and follower of Jesus. My heart echoes the lyrics from the song Because You Loved Me, “The world is a better place because of you. I’m everything I am because you loved me.”

Omer was an adventurer and a lover of the great outdoors. He often traveled to many Arizona lakes and to the white mountains to hunt for elk & deer, fish and camp with family and friends. He also spent many late November afternoons searching Tonto National forest to find the perfect Christmas tree. Omer enjoyed multiple “Bass” fishing trips over the years to the Mexico lakes: Obregon, El Salto, and Baccarat with his son in law, Jim, and close friends. Over the course of his grandson’s exciting football years at USC, Omer never missed a home game. He traveled to Los Angeles with Leeanne and Jim so he could be there to high five his grandson during his team march into the Coliseum, and cheer him on to victory. Omer lived a full life and made an impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His sense of humor and smile brought energy to every room. He was known for his generosity and big heart.

Bernice Elaine HendersonBernie was born in River Rouge, Michigan to William and Sopia Gourlay on July 30th, 1927. She was their third born child and was preceded in death by her siblings William, Geraldine and Robert. Mom was a lifelong Catholic, attending parochial school and for a time, she considered becoming a Nun, but that was not part of God’s plan for her. After graduating from Mercy College with a B.S. in Nursing, June of 1950, she began a nursing career that lasted until she was 75, taking time off as necessary to have her children and to care for Norman. Bernie married the love of her life, Norman Robbins Henderson on October 21, 1950. They were together until he passed away in March of 1991. She never remarried and wasn’t interested in anyone else. Seven of us called her Mom – Michael John, Gary William, Susan Ellen, Sandra Marie, Robin Jean, Kristine Marie and Mark Norman. Michael, Sandra and Susan were waiting for her at Heaven’s Gate along with her beloved Norman. Over the years others have called Bernie Mom, she was easy to love and once she loved you back, she never stopped…there have been so many. She loved the Lord, her husband, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with all her heart, and she prayed for all of us. She spent a lot of time in her garden, cherished the animals that God brought into her life and touched many lives in 95 years. Our Mother bore an enormous amount of responsibility over her lifetime – she always tried to do her very best and for that I will always be grateful. Until we meet again, all my Love. Bernie left us the way she lived, with grace and dignity, June 18, 2023
